Huntsville hip-hop producers the Block Beattaz launch online beats store

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- The requests come from rappers in New York, Chicago and even as far away as Oslo, Norway and Copenhagen, Denmark, arriving via Facebook, Twitter and email.

“Where can we get beats, yo?”

So in the last week of July, Block Beattaz, the 10-man Huntsville hip-hop production collective, opened an online store where artists can purchase beats – the bedrock of percussion and instrumental tracks on top of which rappers record their rhymes – $150 for mixtape purposes or $1,000 for exclusive album usage. 

In the latter instance, the Block Beattaz retain 50 percent of the publishing, in case the resulting music receives placement in films, TV, etc. Beats purchased in larger markets, such as Atlanta, typically start at around $5,000, and depending on the producer, can zoom up to $50,000 or more.
